Engaged in School
When students are engaged in school they want to participate and do well. What are ways we as adults stay engaged in activities?

For Students

|
Be invested, time, money, and interest.
|
Students come prepared, with supplies (check with the FRC if you need help with this). They spend time out of school preparing and talking about it with their family.

Something you enjoy
|
Helping students find classes enjoyable and help them find the purpose.

Prepared, I'm good at it.
|
Student's feel ready for the day and come to class prepared. They have studied, completed homework and are organized and can turn their work in.

Fun

Being involved in extra activities.

|
Have friends not bullied or isolated.

Classwork/Homework
We all have work to do that we may like or don't like to do, at both home and work. How do we as adults manage that? How would that translate to students?

IN GENERAL

For Students
|
|
Goals, deadlines, boss
|
Help set short term expectations and goals for grades and, rewards or consequences. Check in often.
|

Have to do it.
|
Remind students why school is important why there are some things they have to do, like homework and, reading rituals (one hour every night). This becomes a habit like brushing teeth.

|
Organization. Calendars. Files
|
Help students design an organizational plan, for a homework area. Create an expectation for the organization of their back pack and how you want them to fill out their planner so as to communicate with you about what they have to due.
Don't assume a teacher has taken this on. Some do and some don't. If you set the standard then you will know what the words in the planner mean, as it will be your system.

Communication with boss, peers, spouse about expectations.
|
Talk with the teacher often and have your student talk and check in with the student often to determine progress.
|
|
Feel good about where you live/work.
|
It's important that your student like and respect their teachers, school, principal, campus rules etc. If they don't or if they sense you don't they will lose respect for the staff and the school and lose an interest in getting their work done and/or remembering why their education is so important.
If you have an issue with the teacher. First approach the teacher, please try to keep these conversations between you as adults. Also you can problem solve with the FRC or Counseling staff. Lastly, if you have tried everything and you are still frustrated check in with site administrators.
Remember your children will pick up on your anger and frustrations. And as they are less mature they often generalize those feelings to the whole school or all things about the teacher and then begin to resent or rebel against the school or teacher as a whole.

As adult's we comply with a certain set of norms or behavior that may be different then what we do at home. How and Why?

Help students understand that there are rules that apply to everyone for safety and to help them be in a place to learn. They earn more privileges and get to be involved in more activities.

Help students feel safe and that everyone has the same rules.

Avoid drama, stay out of trouble be more engaged in school.
